Weligama's wide, gently shelving bay makes it the most popular place in Sri Lanka to learn to surf, with a long stretch of beach lined with surf schools. It's also known for the traditional stilt fishermen who fish just offshore.

Best time to go
Typically calmest and best for learning from around November to April; the southwest monsoon roughly May to September brings rougher water less suited to beginners.
