First-Time Visitor's Guide to Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a small, laid-back surf town on Sri Lanka's east coast — expect narrow coastal roads, a compact town center, and a mix of beachfront guesthouses and boutique resorts rather than large hotel chains.

Tuk-tuks and scooters are the easiest way to get around town day-to-day; for longer trips (safari, day tours, the airport run) a car or van with a driver is more comfortable, especially with luggage or boards.

Cash is still common for small purchases. Most guesthouses and restaurants accept card payments, but taxi fares (including ours) are usually paid in cash, so keep some Sri Lankan rupees on hand for transfers, tuk-tuks and markets.
