Arugam Bay is a small, laid-back surf town on Sri Lanka's east coast — expect narrow coastal roads, a compact town center, and a mix of beachfront guesthouses and boutique resorts rather than large hotel chains.
Tuk-tuks and scooters are the easiest way to get around town day-to-day; for longer trips (safari, day tours, the airport run) a car or van with a driver is more comfortable, especially with luggage or boards.
Cash is still common for small purchases, but most guesthouses, restaurants and our own booking checkout accept card payments — worth keeping some Sri Lankan rupees on hand for tuk-tuks and markets regardless.
Safe journeys island-wide across Sri Lanka — taxis, rentals, stays and experiences in one booking.
